Individual Reflective Report - Essay Example The greater part of the workforce utilized on transitory premise with restricted or no advantages and advantages for example representative limits, snacks, T&D remittance and so forth, offered other than advertise serious pay. Absence of authoritative commitments regularly brought about unannounced abdications from junior representatives with no notification period. Additionally, because of significant approach changes, center supervisors essentially head supervisors were made legally binding and course of profession movement inside ABC was made limited. Accordingly, the enthusiasm of such administrators in creating and holding essential ability as a business chief was fairly constrained because of their own restricted vocation development. The storekeepers who were the originators and chiefs of the store were the main stable position holders in the association and kept up a removed relationship with rest of the workforce with correspondence for the most part through messages or gatherings at head office. Resultant was no correspondence of management’s qualities, convictions and objectives to rest of the representatives. Besides, HR office was answerable for offering humble help regarding enlistment, finance and representative administration as opposed to assuming a job of HR colleague. A basic examination of the circumstance represents that there were prominent issues looked by ABC as far as absence of initiative presentation, representative inspiration, administrative control, correspondence of vision and key association between HR division and rest of the business. The given circumstance was seen by senior administration when an unexpected visit was paid by one of the accomplices to the store which was met by a progression of progress in some fundamental approaches. During an open gathering with ranking directors, I shared my perspectives by expressing that that the greater part of the representatives see their pay and advantages to be exceptional ly uncompetitive and was happy to switch for minor raises. With the assistance of this info, the board expanded a portion of the advantages while keeping the essential pay structure same and furthermore started the system of representative acknowledgment through best sales rep of the quarter and month to month birthday festivities and so forth. Regardless of the way that these procedures were required to increment employee’s assurance, there was a restricted increment in worker degree of consistency. Along these lines, the mediations planned were not tending to the main drivers of the issues looked by ABC. Self-Evaluation and Application of Organizational Theory Analyzing this situation in the light of hierarchical change models, it was discovered that inside formal and casual subsystems alongside industry related variables were setting off this adjustment in worker maintenance (Waddell et al., 2011). The administration distinguished absence of sensible advantages as the key factor behind low worker inspiration and maintenance disregarding absence of authority and administrative control at ground level. The change that was prompted by the senior administration had a long winded contact with no continuation in advancement of existing approaches. Resultant was a focalized change followed by little adjustment to existing business sector rehearses, free help from directors and pioneers alongside little positive yield. Examining this advancement in the light of progress offered by Plowman et al (2007), it was seen that ABC required a nonstop and radical change since the inside framework was experiencing significant dangers. The inconsistencies were existing association wide and a casing twisting adjustment was required. Another major lacking saw in

They include Valium (diazepam), Xanax (alprazolam), Ativan (lorazepam), Klonopin (clonazepam), Halcion (triazolam) and Librium (chlordiazepoxide). When you are prescribed these drugs, it is important to know how long they are active in your system so you can avoid interactions with other substances and be alert to signs of unusual or dangerous side effects. The Color Purple By Alice Walker - 2341 Words

When The Color Purple is viewed through the gender/feminist lens, the traditional ways society understands men and women is dramatically altered. Alice Walker defies gender norms with her emphasis on the fact that gender and sexuality are not always as simple as society typically thought. By creating characters that challenge gender stereotypes and break out of the norms of society, she creates a book that dissolves gender barriers. With her use of strong, unique characters, Alice is able to change the way people viewed women and men. Characters like Shug Avery and Harpo defy the gender roles expected of them, and influence those around them to change their roles in society as well. While there are characters that reflect gender norms,†¦show more content†¦Whether Walker wrote the story to challenge the views of the readers, or they were her own ideas of breaking stereotypes, her narration and characters reflect the redefinition of gender norms in The Color Purple. Shug Avery is a strong, sharp tongued women who refuses to let herself be suppressed or controlled by any man. â€Å"What will people say, you running off to Memphis like you don t have a house to look after? As an independent woman, she doesn’t care what people think of her or anyone. She does what she wants, does what she pleases, and ultimately defies female stereotypes. â€Å"Man corrupt everything. He on your box of grits, in your head, and all over the radio. He try to make you think he everywhere. Soon as you think he everywhere, you think he God. But he ain t.† (179) During Shug and Celie’s conversation about God, Shug boldly states on her opinion on men and the designated gender of ‘man’ to God. Blatantly stating her disregard for a male God, she opens Celie’s eyes and influences her to see God in a new way and alters her faith basis so it

Swot Analysis Isotopic Analysis - 1577 Words

Isotopic analysis is one of many methods used by archaeologists to look at how past cultures and societies lived and were organized. The stable strontium isotope is one of these, and is primarily (with other isotopes) to look at diet and mobility. The measured value in strontium isotopic analysis is the ratio of the natural abundancy of two of strontium’s’ isotopes; naturally occurring 86Sr and radiogenic 87Sr that is derived from the decay of rubidium-87 (Bentley 2006; Hodell et al. 2004; Price et al. 2002; Sealy et al. 1991). While this number is small (averaging approximately 0.71025 worldwide (C. Chenery et al. 2011)), it is a quantifiable value found in all geological strata on earth. This ratio can also be found in the human body, where it has been derived from the soil where food was grown. it can be found in the hard bone and enamel , and in comparison with the values in the rocks surrounding, can be used to look at human past (Bentley 2006; Chenery et al. 2011; Ericson 1985; Grupe et al. 1997; Hodell et al. 2004; Price et al. 1994a; Price et al. 1994b). Strontium is taken in to our body from our food, where it is derived from the soil. As it is chemically similar to calcium by composition, strontium can replace small amounts of the calcium in our bodies (Bentley 2006; Chenery et al. 2011; Ezzo 1994; Jorgenson et al. 2009; Price et al. 1994). While only a minute amount of the strontium is kept in our bodies, due to its relatively small mass differences between the

The Expansion of Europe and China in the 15th Century free essay sample

The mariners compass, so crucial to navigation out of sight of land, was developed from the Chinese magnetized needle of the 8th century, and it traveled via land route to the Mediterranean where about the 12th century the Europeans or the Arabs developed the true mariners compass (floating), but China soon received the improved model. 27 So both East and West had the mariners compass in the 15th century. We will write a custom essay sample on The Expansion of Europe and China in the 15th Century or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Stern post rudders, which are a significant advantage over steering oars in steering larger ships in tumultuous seas, were utilized in China as early as the 1st century A. D. These were not developed until about the 14th century in Europe, but stern post rudders were available to both East and West in the 15th century. Knowledge of wind and sea currents was considerably more advanced in the West by the Portuguese and Dutch than by the Chinese in the 15th century. 8 The West also had superior knowledge of celestial navigation, that advantage being shared by the Arabs; the Chinese were reduced to utilizing Islamic astronomers and mathematicians at the Imperial Observatory, but had not extended celestial work to the practical work of navigating as of yet. The Arab and the Portuguese cross-staff or balestilha developed in the 14th century, and the astrolabe for even better measurement of the angle of celestial objects in the early 15th century. 29 In military technology, both East and We st had cannon, armor and horses. In summary, before the 15th century, the Chinese were ahead in oceangoing ship technology, with larger compartmented ships and efficient fore-and-aft lugsails on multiple masts. In the 15th century, the Chinese and the Europeans were in rough overall parity. The Chinese were ahead in ship size and hull construction, and the Portuguese were ahead in the arts of navigation, and there was parity in sail technology (the Chinese with battened lugsails, the Portuguese with lateen sails). Neither had a distinct overall advantage. Both were technologically capable of great voyages of discovery, mercantile enterprise, and colonization. In tracing the developments, what is distinctive is that the rate of progress in nautical technology of the West was considerably faster than that of the East. By the 16th century, the West was clearly superior in ocean-going maritime technology (especially considering the regression that occurred in China due to policy influences). During the fifteenth century, Europe began a process of nprecedented expansion that by 1650 had affected all areas of the world. This was actually part of a global tendency towards complexity among many human societies. Matching the empires of the Aztecs, the Inca, and the West Africans were rising states on the Eurasian fringes such as Japan or the European monarchies in England, France, Spain, and Portugal. In Eurasia, developing navigational technology, along with expanding trade, encouraged long sea voyages by Arabs, Japanese, Chinese, and Europea ns. But only the Europeans linked up all the continents in a new global age, when sea power, rather than land-based armies, was the main force in empire-building. Overseas expansion was obviously related both as cause and effect to the European transition from medievalism. The Crusades and the Renaissance stimulated European curiosity; the Reformation produced thousands of zealous religious missionaries seeking foreign converts and refugees seeking religious freedom; and the monarchs of emerging sovereign states sought revenues, first from trade with the Orient and later by exploiting a new world. Perhaps the most permeating influence was the rise of European capitalism, with its monetary values, profit-seeking motivations, investment institutions, and constant impulse toward economic expansion. Some historians have labeled this whole economic transformation the Commercial Revolution. Others have used the phrase in a narrower sense, referring to the shift in trade routes from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. Interpreted either way, the Commercial Revolution and its accompanying European expansion helped usher in the modern era.

How Being Single Has Benefits free essay sample

For those who ask, the name came from a fortune cookie. The second one said True love Is right under your nose. , and I knew that one was a lie. It was bad enough yesterday at the gym, a guy was basically shut down by me after asking my advice on him being in love with a long time girlfriend and planned on going to the next level. My response compared true love to the digestive system. Being led on to is stomach gas before getting disposed in the end. I think after that he got the point to not bother me on that subject In the gym of all places. Does that make me a bad person? A sour person perhaps? As wrong as It Is to feel that way I think I have the right to. That and having two separate personalities. An angry insecure person thats basically bi-polar is one due to having a heavy complex and verbal insults. Sometimes I think its due to past occurrences. Always chasing after pipe dreams, whether Its goals or relationships. But I know people also have that mentality at times as I sit and watch. Instead of hitting an epiphany, It makes me realize that IM not the only one. Especially recently engine friends go through rough break-ups.The difference, one was dumb enough to go back to their ex despite being ignored attention wise, is a lot better than her past relationships. As for the other, I remember when I first saw her at age 1 9 and wanted to be with her based on loving her accent alone as she was already cute. Years later I see her leaving a relationship with a guy who didnt deserve her IMO. Not because Im the better choice, but the fact it gives off noticeably. But all you can do is support and hope for the best. But I can say this, a woman like her, a GOOD woman like her is very art to find.Vince Vaughn once mentioned In a interview that If he didnt make personal goals that theres no chances disappointments because he didnt fulfill It. To many, you figure how pathetic. To me, I disagree. In situations Like this you figure, It hurts to let go. Sometimes it seems the harder you try to hold on to something or someone the more it wants to get away. You feel like some kind of criminal for having felt, for having wanted. For having wanted to be wanted. It confuses you, because you think that your feelings were wrong and it makes you feel so small because Its so hard to pep It Inside when you let It out and it doesnt coma back.Youre left so alone that you cant explain. Damn, theres nothing Like that, Is there? Ive been there and you have too. Youre nodding your head. Somewhere someone is thinking of a lover. Someone is calling that person an angel, best friend, or redeemer. This person is using celestial colors to paint the mental image of something special. Someone is making a vision so beautiful that it can only live In the mind. Someone Is thinking of the way your breath escapes your lips when you give pleasure a home. These thoughts are saving a life somewhere right now. So crystalline. So pure. Such life saving power when you smile. The downward spiral is you will never know how you have categorized my wounds or you would deny it like a immature person. Its so sad that we will never touch again like before. How it hurts me to know that I will never be able to have everything that you are But instead watch. I hate every time walking into the area you call a home and cant help but feel pure disappointment. I want to leave, I want to tear everything inside. Was it a crime to be the guy who rather see the smile on your face, hold your hand, and brighten my day.Sounds better than being the guy who begs for a cheap orgasm, then walks away after a few rounds. Which one has a better chance of happening these days? Knowing that now IM Just your comfort fix when things doesnt go your way is the biggest put-down ever. To give up an item to someone more in need made better sense, rather have my orientation ridiculed and questioned by others. I suppose its better than nothing? Its already been like this for years, like a clockwork orange. It adds more fuel to the ego-driven monster inside of me that I dont plan on losing. At lease that personality of me is always reliable.

Free Essays on Eugene ONeil-Long Days Journey Into Night

O’Neill and Family Through the Lens of Long Day’s Journey into Night The family of Eugene O’Neill is what Long Day’s Journey into Night is truly about. This touching play served O’Neill as a means to document, establish, embellish, and immortalize his pain, suffering, and trials within himself and his family. For the most part what O’Neill wrote was largely true, although there are some instances where something of a â€Å"poetic license† was taken in relating the facts. The basis of this play was not for monetary gain, fame, success or even notoriety, but for self-realization. O’Neill had a deep-felt need to relate and even expunge himself of so much of what was always on his mind. Long Day’s Journey into Night was written in 1939, while Eugene’s last â€Å"formal† play that was produced was in 1934. (Gelb 3). This lends credence to the fact that Long Day’s Journey into Night was indeed written for himself, as a necessity rather than as another production in his professional life. Another aspect of this play that bears great relevance to determining O’Neill’s motivation and drive for it is a quote from O’Neill’s wife â€Å"He explained to me that he had to write the play, he had to write it because it was a thing that haunted him and he had to forgive his family and himself.† Lastly, there is the fact that O’Neill had it put in his will that Long Day’s Journey into Night was not to be released until three years after his death. All of this irrefutably demonstrating the fact that O’Neill’s creation of Long Day’s Journey into Night was an internal drive, an intrinsic need to chronicle the trials of his life and those around him. Throughout O’Neill’s works there are ! often thinly veiled references to members of his family, but none to pointed or open for fear of alienating his own family. Sex offenders in Australia Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Sex offenders in Australia - Essay Example It is thus reasonable to expect society to consider and undertake all possible viable solutions against sex offenses. In the United States, the passage of Megan’s Law has is widely known for making legal the naming of sex offenders after they have been released from prison, as a means by which the community they are reintegrated in are made aware of the risks. In our country, Australia, there is the Australian National Child Offender Register (ANCOR) targeting sex offenders of minor children, and monitoring them for a certain duration of time. However, this is altogether different from the â€Å"naming and shaming† of these individuals, which Australia has still not allowed. The issue of the naming of sex offenders has hit the headlines in recent months, with Melboune broadcaster Derryn Hinch lost his court battled against suppression orders to protect child abusters. Victoria’s Sex Abusers Monitoring Act, he said, was unconstitutional for not explicitly stating that court proceedings must be held publicly. He also said that suppression orders are unconstitutional. Deciding against him, the courts held that suppression orders are unconstitutional and he was guilty of contempt for divulging the names of the sex offenders. And yet, there is growing public support around the idea of naming and shaming, such support built upon populist sentiments condemning sexual offenses, demonizing sezual offenders and rousing fears that communities will not be safe in the presence of these sex offenders. In my paper, I will use two criminological theories to examine and critique this notion of naming of sex offenders. These are the conflict theory of criminology and the classical theory of criminology. A. Conflict Theory In order to discuss Conflict theory, it is incumbent to compare it with the consensus theory. The sociological theories that underpin our understanding of crime and punishment, as well as the justice system have long been the subject of deb ate by opposing ideological camps. The divergent approaches of â€Å"consensus† and â€Å"conflict† and what approach is the most appropriate lens with which to understand crimes remains to be discussed today, with the debates evolving to meet more modern and complex contemporary problems. It is imperative to begin by defining the concepts. Reid (119) defined the consensus approach as one that â€Å"views the emerging norms and laws of society as representative of the common feeling about what is right and proper; that is, they represent a consensus of views—a mechanism for maintaining social order.† It looks at society as a homogenous whole, without factions or frictions, and making a collective determination on what is right and what is wrong. For example, taking a very recent incident, the harsh punishments meted against the London street rioters might be deemed appropriate among proponents of the consensus theorists: indeed, the destruction of private property and petty larceny go against collective values and the State must bear down heavily upon those who seek to trample those values. In contrast, the proponents of the conflict theory look at society not as a homogenous whole, but as one wracked by class fault lines. Therefore, laws are not simply collectively-agreed upon rules that establish social order and ensure the efficient and harmonious functioning

VBD report Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

VBD report - Essay Example In the light of the events which have occurred in the Brisbane branch of the firm in a span of six weeks, the scenario behind the resignation of four line managers as a result of inadequate opportunities to participate in the decision making of the business is being considered critically by the company to assess the state of participative management techniques and leadership models in the company’s Brisbane branch. Hence, the purpose of this report is to explore the circumstances surrounding the resignation of the four line managers to better understand the application of the leading and organizing function of management in the firm and present appropriate recommendations for addressing the present issue successfully thereby, reducing turnover rates in the future. The prevalent issue in the organization is associated with the concept of employee turnover which is demonstrated by the resignation of four line manager’s at the company’s Brisbane branch in the time period of six weeks. According to Jang (2008), the concept of employee turnover can be defined as â€Å"the gross movement of workers in and out of employment with respect to a given company†. Moreover, the concept of turnover can be assessed in terms of voluntary and involuntary turnover, which in this case is associated with the former as the employees have willingly resigned from their respective positions (Cascio and Boudreau, 2010). While, the explanation of central causes of employee turnover have often been described by researchers as being unique to the organization or even individual cases, it has already been established that the fundamental reason behind the four resignations which have been received by the company is a consequence of inadequate HR pract ices. As noted by Jackson, Schuler and Werner (2011), poor levels of job satisfaction and absence of fair opportunities in the workplace can promote a sense of

Memory Test For Positive And Negative Words Psychology Essay

Memory Test For Positive And Negative Words Psychology Essay In the subject of Word Memory, many different types of researches have been done in the past. In many of these researches we can find that many different factors affect the way we remember some words. Examples of different factors are familiarity, imageability, arousal, and valence. In this particular study we took a look at one of these factors, negative and positive words. The subjects in this experiment were shown a list of 20 different words, and our hypothesis: subjects with low mean age will remember more negative words than positive ones. However we did not find any relevant difference between the two groups of words, more extensive studies could be carried out on the subject to see relevant differences. Introduction. There has been broad different researches in the field of Word Memory, and experts have been trying to figure out whether word recollection is affected by different variables. In some experiments it has come to light that word recollection is greatly affected by word concreteness. Concrete words are easier to remember than abstract words (Walker, Ian; Hulme, Charles, 1999). But yet it is not the only factor that can affect word memory. In some other cases, it was shown that the results were affected by the frequency of the words. As shown in the study conducted by Robert E. Guttentag and Donna Carroll (1997), word recollection is greatly affected by the frequency of the words: The findings indicated that subjects were better at remembering the mental operations utilized at study for low frequency than for high frequency words. In this research in particular we are going to focus on the emotionality of the words, such as positive and negative words. In long-term memory, negative information is better remembered than neutral information. Differences in processes important to working memory may contribute to this emotional memory enhancement (Kensinger, Elizabeth A.; Corkin, Suzanne, 2003) As stated emotion in memory can have quite a big impact. The way we feel about words meaning can greatly change the amount of time we will remember that specific word. In another experiment, subjects were depression induced, and had to undergo recollection of words. The experiments showed that emotion played a key role into the controlled group and the other. The subjects were recolling words based on the emotions induced from the experimenters. (Bradley, Mogg, Galbraith Perrett, 1993). Our goal is to investigate on the effect of emotionality in words recollection. Subjects will be shown 2 different groups of words for a total of 20 words. Negative words and Positive words. Since pre-experiment we knew that the age of the participants and size of the group were relatively small, we hypothesized that the participants will remember negative words more than positive words. Methods. Design: The experiment was a within subject design and the controlled variable was the valency of the words, positive and negative. The number of the words that each participant would remember was the dependent variable. The problem of order effect was overcome by creating two separate powerpoint presentations. The order of the words was also different and randomized. Participants: All of the participants were part of the psychology class at Aberdeen university. 16 subjects. Out of all the participants only 1 was male, the rest 15 were females. The mean age of the participants was 20.69, with a SD of 2.44 Apparatus: The main tool of the experiment were presentations done by using PowerPoint. All the subjects were presented with 20 words (10 positive 10 negative). The source were we took the words is Bellezza, Greenwald and Banajis (1986) catalogue of words. The 20 words were on a pleasantness scale. Positive pleasantness mean: 4.50, negative pleasantness mean: 1,64. In order to randomize and finding out the mean of pleasantness of the words also the program Microsoft Excel was used. Later for the results and analysis, a software named Statistical Package for Social Science was used. Procedure: Each subject was given a computer were the power point presentation was started. The presentation gave the instructions to each participant. The first slide showed the participants that they would be shown a list of 20 words, each word was shown on screen for only 2 seconds. Afterwards they would have to remember as many words as they could from the ones shown. It also said that between the acquisition and recollection of the words they would take a 2 minutes mathematical questionnaire, and then they could write down as many words as they could remember from the slides. After the experiment was over, we recorded the results of each participant and their sex and age. We then took those results and analyzed them using SPSS. Results. The results were the following: the mean number of words remembered for negative condition was 4.00 with a SD of 1.63, the standard error was 0.41. Instead for the positive condition, the mean was 3.69 with a SD of 1.54 and the standard error of 0.38. The results can be seen in chart below (Figure 1). Figure 1. Means for both negative and positive scores. Each top bar rappresents the plus or minus 1 for standard error. Since the results shown in Figure 1 very similar to each other, more analysis had to be done. A paired samples t-test was used in this case. The t-test showed that the mean for positive condition was 3.69, with a SD of 1.54. The mean for the negative condition was 4.00 with a SD of 1.63. Therefore the results showed us that there were no relevant differences between the two condition. Due to the results been non-significant, we can state that our hypothesis is not supported and it could be rejected. Discussion. According to Thomas Hasher (2006), the phenomena stated in our hypothesis would happen if the subjects were of younger age. Unfortunately as we saw in our results, our hypothesis, that negative words would be remembered more than positive words, was rejected. This could be due to different factors such as sex, age (Thomas Hasher, 2006), ethnicity and numbers of subject. Many different things could be the reason why we did not receive the results we were expecting. For example, the number of our participant was limited to 16. In a case where we would of have 100 or 1000 we could of seen the differences in the means curve. Also the words were a limited number. A list of 20 words could be too few to prove the hypothesis. For future studies these aspects should be observed and improved in order to see results more towards to our hypothesis. Conclusion. To conclude, the results in this experiment were not to expectations. The low number of participants and the list of few words were the main factors for these results. In future experiments perhaps we would take in consideration these factors and also improve other particulars, such as space where the experiment is taken; perhaps a single room for each participant would have impact on the recollection of words (less distractions). And also the time and task before the recollection, could be a bit longer time and different/more challenging task.

Dividend Policy & Capital Structure

â€Å"Comparative Analysis of Dividend Policy & Capital Structure† Prepared For: Lutfur Rahman Senior Lecturer, Department of Business Administration, East West University. Course Code: FIN-435 Course Title: Managerial Finance Prepared By: Md. Habibur Rahman Utpal Kumar Ghosh ID: 2006-2-10-175 ID: 2006-2-10-179 Date of Submission: August 11, 2009 East West University 43, Mohakhali C/A, Dhaka-1212 Introduction ? ? Origin of the Report: Mr. Lutfur Rahman, Senior Lecturer, East West University, has assigned this report to us, as this report is a requirement of the course â€Å"Managerial Finance†. Objectives of the Report: The broad objective of the report is to build a strong familiarity about the Dividend policy & Capital Structure to measure the performance of the company. By preparing this report we are trying to acquaintance of the overall dividend policy & capital Structuring. Moreover the superficial objective of the report is to acquire knowledge about the insights of interpreting the ratios. Preparing this report such kind of topic is extremely beneficial for us as the students of finance. Scope of the Report: This report is based on the dividend policy & capital Structuring. Through this report we are try to focus on the area related to the financial performance of the companies. We particularly focus on dividend policy & capital Structuring and related ratios; as those are the major indicator of the performance assessment of a firm. Methodology: For execution of the report we use MS office software. Topic of the report is not permitting us to input data from primary sources. As the report must be factual, the data source of this report is basically secondary sources. We gathered our relevant data from the different periodicals published by the two cement companies. We also collect our relevant information from different books as well. We also collected some data from the internet to broaden our scope of analysis. Dhaka Stock Exchange websites, Meghna Cements mills website, Confidence Cement Ltd, websites are few of them. Limitations: †¢ Inadequate knowledge in studying reports. †¢ Lack of in-depth understanding of certain terms and concepts prevented us from going into details. †¢ Lacks of research. †¢ Unavailability of updated data. †¢ Time limitation is also been there. †¢ Lack of information and coordination. Confidentiality of data was another imperative barrier that was faced during the conduct of this study. †¢ Power Crisis. ? ? ? 2|Page Dividend Policy ? Dividend: Dividends are payments made by a corporation to its shareholders. It is the portion of corporate profits paid out to stockholders. When a corporation earns a profit or surplus, that money can be put to two uses: it can either be re-invested in the business (called retained earnings), or it can be paid to the shareholders as a dividend. Many corporations retain a portion of their earnings and pay the remainder as a dividend. For a joint stock company, a dividend is allocated fast as a fixed amount per share. Therefore, a shareholder receives a dividend in proportion to their shareholding. For the joint stock company, paying dividends is not an expense; rather, it is the division of an asset among shareholders. Public companies usually pay dividends on a fixed schedule, but may declare a dividend at any time, sometimes called a special dividend to distinguish it from a regular one. Cooperatives, on the other hand, allocate dividends according to members' activity, so their dividends are often considered to e a pre-tax expense. Dividends are usually settled on a cash basis, as a payment from the company to the shareholder. They can take other forms, such as store credits (common among retail consumers' cooperatives) and shares in the company (either newly-created shares or existing shares bought in the market. ) Further, many public companies offer dividend reinvestment plans, which automatically use the c ash dividend to purchase additional shares for the shareholder. ? Forms of Payments: ? Cash dividends (most common) are those paid out in the form of a check. Such dividends are a form of investment income and are usually taxable to the recipient in the year they are paid. This is the most common method of sharing corporate profits with the shareholders of the company. For each share owned, a declared amount of money is distributed. Thus, if a person owns 100 shares and the cash dividend is $0. 50 per share, the person will be issued a check for 50 dollars. ? Stock dividends are those paid out in form of additional stock shares of the issuing corporation, or other corporation (such as its subsidiary corporation). They are usually issued in proportion to shares owned (for example, for every 100 shares of stock owned, 5% stock dividend will yield 5 extra shares). If this payment involves the issue of new shares, this is very similar to a stock split in that it increases the total number of shares while lowering the price of each share and does not change the market capitalization or the total value of the shares held. ? Property dividends are those paid out in the form of assets from the issuing corporation or another corporation, such as a subsidiary corporation. They are relatively rare and most frequently are securities of other companies owned by the issuer, however they can take other forms, such as products and services. ? Other dividends can be used in structured finance. Financial assets with a known market value can be distributed as dividends; warrants are sometimes distributed in this way. For large companies with subsidiaries, dividends can take the form of shares in a subsidiary company. A common technique for â€Å"spinning off† a company from its parent is to distribute shares in the new company to the old company's shareholders. The new shares can then be traded independently. |Page ? Types of Dividend Policies: ? Constant-Payout-Ratio Dividend Policy: A dividend policy based on the payment of a certain percentage of earnings to owners in each dividend period. ? Regular Dividend Policy: A dividend policy based on the payment of a fixed-dollar dividend in each period. Often firm that use this policy increase the regular d ividend once a proven increase in earning has occurred. ? Low-Regular-and-Extra Dividend Policy: A dividend based on paying a low regular dividend, supplemented by an additional dividend when earnings are higher than normal in a given period. Argument for Dividend Relevance : Gittman (10th edition) divided stock into two types, such as common stock and preferred stock. He also showed that dividends are the outcome of investment. So, common stocks are an ownership claim against primarily real or productive asset (Higgins, 1995), but he also said that if the company prospers, stockholders are the chief beneficiaries, if it falters, they arc the chief losers. Smith (1988) presented that stocks arc one of the most popular forms of investment. People buy stocks for various reasons: Some are interested in the long-term growth of their investment by buying low priced stock of a new company in the hope of substantially growth of share price over the next few years. Another reason he suggested that in a well established firm stockholders expect the stock growth will be stable over the long run. (Smith. 1988). Stockholders expect dividend but it is not promised (Gitman, 10th edition). Common stocks are hold by true owners of the business. Sometimes they are known as residual owners’ as they receive whatever left after winding up of the company (Gitman, 10th edition; Higgins 1995). Another type of stock is known as publicly owned stock. Common stock owned by a broad group of unrelated investors or institutional investors is called as publicly owned stock. However, all common stock of a firm owned by a small group of investors is denoted as closely owned stock. When all the stock is owned by a single person is known as privately owned stock. Due to the limit of number of share, stock can be classified in to four types. Such as authorize share, outstanding share, treasury stock and issued stock (Gitman, 10th edition). Authorized shares represent the maximum number of shares a firm allows to issue. Outstanding shares are hold by public. Treasury stock is repurchased by firm itself and it is no longer considered as outstanding share. Issued shared are the shares that have been put into circulation. Recently stock repurchase option is very popuLar as it is able to increase stock value by decreasing outstanding stock number (Port. 1976). Port also suggested that firms should avoid issuing stock to pay dividend as they slow down company growth. According to Short and Wclsch (1990), Johns (1998) and Port (1976), a dividend is a usually distributed in cash form to stock holders of a corporation approved by the board of director. It may also include stock dividend or other forms of payment. A stock dividend represents a distribution of additional shares to common stockholders (Higgins, 1995). On the other hand. Ross et al. (2005) divided earnings into two parts; either it is retained or paid as dividend. Whereas Wild et al. (2001), Johns (1998) and Kieso et al. (2004) argued that retained earnings are the primary source of dividend distribution to the stockholder. Dividends are only cash payments regularly made by corporations to their stockholders (Johns, 1998). He also specified that they are decided upon the declaration by the board of the directors and can range from zero to virtually any amount the corporation can afford to pay. 4|Page Jones (2005) said that dividends are the only cash payment a stockholder receives directly from firm and these are the foundation of valuation for common stocks. Stock price response to an unexpected dividend change announcement is related to the dividend preferences of the marginal investor in that firm where other things remaining same (Denis et al. , 1994). In addition, a company. Which changes dividend policy, is expected to xperience upward or downward trends in share returns (Gunasekarage et al. , 2006). They also said that for the initiating firms, the share prices continued to rise even after the initial public offering (IPOs). Higgins (1995) said that if the company will have less money to invest or it will have to raise more money from external sources to make the same investments stockholders cl aim on future cash flow, which reduces share price appreciation. Moreover, during dividend announcement period stock price also fluctuate due to announcement of dividend. Mulugetta et al. 2002) examined the impact of Standard and Poor are ranking changes on stock prices. In addition, Affleck-Graves & Mendenhall (1992) found that stock price reacts after 8 days on average up to 54 days of such earning announcement. With this believe, Hampton (1996) said that value of stock increase by more dividend and share remain undervalued by lower dividend policy. In addition, he also showed that there are two schools of thought regarding with the effect of dividend on stick price, one is dividends do not affect market price and the another one is dividend policies have profound effects on a firm’s position in the stock market. Benartzi et al. (1997), Ofer and Siegel’s (1987) and Bae (1996) found a positive correlation between share price and dividend. Furthermore. Campbell and Shi ller (1988) found a relationship between stock prices, earnings and expected dividends and he drives a conclusion that earnings and dividends is powerful in predicting stock returns over several years. Wilkic analyzed a 76 months share price index and dividend announced. He found a correlation coefficient. Which was under 0. 7 for the period 76 months and he also get that the maximum value of the regression coefficient being reached after 79 months. Moreover. ShilLer (1984. 1989) recommended investors in his study to buy the stocks when price is low relative to dividends and to sell stocks when it is high payoffs. On the other hand to their opinion, Jensen and Johnson (1995) suggested that, dividend cut results reduction in share price. More interesting matter is that if capital markets are perfect, dividends have no influence on the share price (MilLer and Modgliani, 1961). MiLler and ModgLiani (1961) also states that if the market is imperfect, dividend may affect stock price. ? Current Practices of Dividend Policy in Bangladesh: As Bangladesh is a developing country, the corporate culture is growing very slightly in our country. Dividend policy is a major financing decision that involves with the payment to shareholders in return of their investments. Every firm operating in a given industry follows some sort of dividend payment pattern or dividend policy and obviously it is a financial indicator of the firm. Thus, demand of the firm’s share should to some extent. Dependant on the firm’s dividend payment pattern. Many investors like to watch the dividend yield, which is calculated as the annual dividend income per share divided by the current share price. The dividend yield measures the amount of income received in proportion to the share price. If a company has a low dividend yield compared to other companies in its sector, it can mean two things: (1) the share price is high because the market reckons the company has impressive prospects and isn’t overly worried about the company’s dividend payments, or (2) the company is in trouble and cannot afford to pay reasonable dividends. At the same time, however, a high dividend yield can signal a sick company with a depressed share price. Dividend yield is of little importance for growth companies because, retained earnings will be reinvested in expansion opportunities, giving shareholders profits in the form of capital gains. 5|Page MEGHNA CEMENT limited (MCML) ? A firm's capital structure is then the composition or ‘structure' of its liabilities. For example, a firm that sells $20 billion in equity and $80 billion in debt is said to be 20% equity-financed and 80% debt-financed. The firm's ratio of debt to total financing, 80% in this example, is referred to as the firm's leverage. In reality, capital structure may be highly complex and include tens of sources. Gearing Ratio is the proportion of the capital employed of the firm which come from outside of the business finance, e. g. by taking a long term loan etc. The Modigliani-Miller theorem, proposed by Franco Modigliani and Merton Miller, forms the basis for modern thinking on capital structure, though it is generally viewed as a purely theoretical result since it assumes away many important factors in the capital structure decision. The theorem states that, in a perfect market, how a firm is financed is irrelevant to its value. This result provides the base with which to examine real world reasons why capital structure is relevant, that is, a company's value is affected by the capital structure it employs. These other reasons include bankruptcy costs, agency costs, taxes, information asymmetry, to name some. This analysis can then be extended to look at whether there is in fact an optimal capital structure: the one which maximizes the value of the firm. 10 | P a g e Capital Structure Meghna Cement Mills LTD.
